Review of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) by Rainer K — 07 Oct 2011
Wow, visually amazing on from the first minutes - really impressive what first-time director Kerry Conran put together here. Unfortunately, it seems that he used all he's resources for special effects and similar nick-nack and forgot about a plausible plot or character development.
Even the incredible coolness of Jude Law can't save it from falling into a strange fantastical hole where all this fancy technology gets out of hand (maybe Conran was just too motivated). Whatsoever, the whole film turns into a Jurassic Park/King Kong kind of thing when it should have stayed by its The Iron Giant meets Film Noir beginnings.
I feel kinda sorry for the film that it lost its focus because even with this flaws it provides genuine entertainment if you don't take it to serious.
Crazy scientists, futuristic weapons and a villain called Totenkopf - bleak but shiny visuals which create a noir atmosphere and some moments that reminded me of Star Wars (especially Totenkopf's main henchman).
