Review of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) by David B — 21 Nov 2011
While other contemporary CGI epics have dated like bananas in a brown paper bag (think Legolas killing the Oliphant in Return of the King), Sky Captain's harkening to retro sci-fi aesthetics has kept it appropriately kitsch.
I think what have been misread as lacklustre performances on the part of what on paper appears to be a solid cast, is actually a problem of misdirection - they were made to act that way to capture the mood of that era, but it doesn't quite translate.
Still, Hollywood should be given credit for the attempt. It comes off with comic book flair in better ways than some of the Frank Miller sorts of attempts.
