Review of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) by Derek B — 06 Jul 2012
An exceptional loving tribute to the science-fiction and action media of yester-year, this film was basically a love-letter to people like me with an infatuation with retro-futurism and atomic-age sci-fi.
Some of the digital effects seem questionable in their implementation, but they can be justified if accepted as a tribute to the bad special-effects of the 50's sci-fi on which this film homages.
It invokes a very Raiders of the Lost Ark-feel in its presentation of the action and adventure and will be enjoyed by fans of those kinds of movies.
Creative, fun, fast-paced and a visual feast for retro-futurism fans, this movie is one of the examples where style-over-substance can actually work. Give it a try.
