Review of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) by Andrew N — 09 Oct 2012
This movie was OK. The plot consists of ace pilot Sky Captain (Jude Law) and reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) trying to stop a mad scientist's ("Dr. Totenkopf"-subtle, that) plot to destroy the world (judged 'too sick to survive' post WW1) and colonize space using a giant space-ark-rocket thingee.
Oh spoiler, they succeed. I really liked the visual aesthetic (dieselpunk with a little atompunk thrown in) but the plot was too flat and rambling to get that interested in. Angelina Jolie (who's in about 10 minutes of it) added nothing to this movie and her fake British accent was HORRIBLE.
Giovanni Ribisi as the heroic scientist was pretty good, however. This is a weird criticism, but I thought the movie was (literally) too dark; I watched it without the lights off and I still had a hard time seeing what was going on in some scenes.
Overall, if you like this type of sci-fi aesthetic see this movie, if you don't, skip it and watch Raiders of the Lost Ark or instead.
