Review of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) by Rod E — 15 Jan 2013
If there ever was a movie that could have been great but instead is just ok, it's Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Lets forget that the effects are completely obvious and distracting in ways that Sin City and the new Star Wars aren't and the cgi would still completely obvious.
Sky Captain should have been the feather in the cap of digital cinema but wound up with an egg on its face. It has a great stylized concept. Retro-futuristic, Giant Robots attacking, the look and feel of a 1930's cartoon.
.check and check. So what happened? I don't know. I haven't seen this since the theater so I'm not too sure. All I know is that aside from a decent plot destroyed by awful graphics, the whole ending and villainous plot was a complete joke.
It's cool in theory to have a dead acting legend like Laurence Olivier in a role as the villain just didnt cut it. Sky Captain is a giant waste of potential awesomeness.
