I found Mogie to be the most interesting character (and Graham Greene to be the best actor in the film). He is a funny yet tragic figure. The relationships he has with his son and brother reveal a complex family dynamic where he is dependent upon them for money (to fuel his alcoholism) and help (when he gets in trouble or becomes ill). At the same time he wants to be a good father and independent of his brother's help, but is incapable of it because of his alcoholism.

Rudy is interesting because he is torn between various loyalties (his people, his job as a police officer, his sense of justice, his family). I think his defining moment, the culmination of the film, and the combining of his various loyalties all come together when he throws red paint onto George Washington's nose on Mt. Rushmore.
