What we have here is Hughes making bubble & squeak. It's as though he's got all the little plots and characters that didn't fit into his other films and chucked them all together for this one.
If Cameron Crowe had made this I'd be stunned and taking back everything I've ever said about him, but as it's Hughes it's still good, watchable and enjoyable, just not so much as his other work.
