Review of Sixteen Candles (1984) by Alan D — 06 Aug 2009
In the 80's one film maker reigned supreme, and this was his directorial debut. john Hughes wrote and directed sixteen candles in 1984 and it was the start of a new kind movie. granted his next movie "the breakfast club" was the real shift, but without this little gem he wouldn't be on the map, and the teen movie genre wouldn't of taken of as much as it did.
as always anthony michael hall plays the geek, but does it so well it can only be admired. molly ringwald is superb as the disheartened lead. the cast is made up by a few other actors who went on to big things, gedde watanebe went on to star in ER and the cusack siblings are still working in big movies today.
Hughes was always a sucker for great music, and makes use of some great 80's choons! its well made and shot in a totally frantic and anarchic way, paving with way for many other multi layered teen movies, such as dazed and confused.
its cheesy and a little predictable but this is forgiven for it's uplifting feel. john Hughes will always be remembered for paving the way for adolescent cinema and leaving a buzz running through you when you watch his films.
