Review of Sixteen Candles (1984) by Cassandra M — 10 Sep 2009
Pretty decent teen movie by John Hughes with Molly Ringwald, Michael Shoeffling and Anthony Michael Hall.
It's Samantha's sixteenth birthday and everybody has forgotten since her sister is about to get married. On the love front things are just as bad. Sam is in love with Jake Ryan but the problem is that he is a senior- she is a freshman and he is already dating the gorgeous, perfect Carolyn. And on top of it all, Sam is constantly bothered by the geek "farmer Ted" who has a crush on Sam and don't give up after the first 50 no's.
I found this movie quite OK. Though I didn't find the jokes funny, the plot was interesting enough. The acting was satisfying, but I have to say that there was a little bit too much clichées. And the character "Tall Duck Dong" really went on my nerves. Talking about caricatyrs...
Like most of John Hughes movies, there's a happy ending in this one too. And a high bride.
