Review of Sixteen Candles (1984) by Donald L — 19 Feb 2010
Another Hughes movie I, apparently, "just don't get". To me the characters flail from gag to gag with no more recognizable motivation other than "the director told me so". I get it, its a teen comedy and teens are so insane, but there have been entries in this field that were funny and relative and still had a clear sense of direction in writing.
I also didn't care for the whole class/clique struggle in the movie that just ended with Ringwald driving on to forever after with the rich deep guy in his red porsche. The ONLY thing I will give this movie over Pretty in Pink (my LEAST favorite of Hughe's movies I've seen) is at least Ringwald wasn't a repugnant bitch in this one.
I could at least see SOME small part of her worth liking...
