Review of Sixteen Candles (1984) by Brian S — 01 Jun 2010
John Hughes presents one of his definitive campy 80s teen comedies with this little gem. I draw several comparisons to Ferris Bueller's day off--it's fun, it's funny, but it makes pretty much zero sense in the real world.
Hughes' film universe is one of "what if teenagers ran the world?". entertaining characters, great writing, and some amazingly cheesy sound effects that I don't think were entirely necessary.
my one big problem is with the classic ending--I think it takes fantasy a little too far, explaining nothing and concluding the story in a very unsatisfying way. nonetheless a very enjoyable film.
