Review of Sisters (1973) by Emily H — 13 Aug 2010
The Voyeuristic Loop AKA Rope in a Couch.
De Palma's love of psychological thrillers begins here. The film itself possesses a superb opening 15 minutes. It features a great soundtrack, immense tension and a murderous payoff that somewhat chilling. Hitchcock is certainly meditated on with Rear Window, Rope, Psycho and Vertigo all referenced in this opening.
The film loses its fun once the reporter enters the scene. Everything is just a little too predictable. The only other interest in the film relates to the voyeuristic loop where loose ends are not tied up and a private detective is left looking through binoculars at a couch. Special mention goes to Acme Window Cleaning. That's how you go undercover.
