Review of Sister Act (1992) by Deb S — 14 Jun 2010
Whoopi Goldberg plays a night club singer in Reno whose boyfriend Vince (Harvey Keitel) is involved in a mob. When Deloris witnesses her boyfriend killing an informant, she bolts away to the police to report the crime. Lt. Eddie Souther (played by Bill Nunn) decides to put Deloris in the Witness Protection Program, by having her hide out as a nun in the convent, until the time comes for her to testify against her boyfriend.
At first Delores thinks that she is completely in the wrong place but after wards it appears to be that fate has sent her a gift, allowing her to be of real importance to other people and add new meaning to their lives. You've got to laugh at some of the situations that arise when Goldberg tries to adjust to her new settings. Whoppi Goldberg gives a superb performance and was very funny as Sister Mary Clarence. I especially enjoyed Wendy Makkena as the painfully shy Sister Mary Robert, Kathy Najimy as the outrageously outgoing Sister Mary Patrick and Maggie Smith is great as Mother Superior and the music is outstanding. Funny stuff.
