Review of Sissi: The Fateful Years of an Empress (1957) by Amanda C — 04 Jun 2011
I'll write about the series at greater length soon. The first Sissi is the best, but the second increases the tension between the fairy tale romance and the get- of the first. By the final film she wins people over not by teaching them to get down but by exercising a carefully threaded political charm - and motherhood.
Maybe they're not the Austrian royal version of the Beach Blanket Bingo movies I first took them for, but they do paint a pretty picture of society on the verge of tumultuous change.
