Review of Sirocco (1951) by Daryl K — 17 Apr 2014
If you're not out of Damascus in twelve hours you'll be shot!
In 1925 Damascus, Harry Smith is a gun smuggler taking advantage of the locals fending off the French militia. He meets a French Colonel and the Colonel's girl in a local cantina. The colonel wants Smith to set up a meeting with his weapons supplier. Harry uses this as a chance to steal the Colonel's girl and make some loot behind his back.
"I made a monkey out of you.".
Curtis Bernhardt, director of Possessed, A Stolen Life, Miss Saddie Thompson, Interrupted Melody, High Wall, and Million Dollar Baby, delivers Sirocco. The storyline for this picture was interesting but not outstanding. The characters were fun but kind of cheesy and the script was fairly mediocre. The cast delivers solid performances and includes Humphrey Bogart, Lee Cobb, Everett Sloane, Gerald Mohr, and Zero Mostel.
"It's a pity you can only die once.".
I randomly came across this movie and DVR'd it off a local channel. I was entertained by this picture, but it is far from one of my favorite Bogart movies. He was more of a light hearted character than he generally is, but it wasn't as well written as We're No Angels. Overall, I recommend seeing this if you're a Bogart fan, but I wouldn't go too far out of my way to watch this.
"We don't want them going away soft headed.".
Grade: C+.
