Review of Sinister (2012) by Sam C — 07 Sep 2013
After watching two terrible movies starring Ethan Hawke, trying to save them by using his unique talents to make them bearable (The Purge, Getaway), I went into this movie expecting more of the same. By god, was I wrong.
As usual, Ethan Hawke is surrounded by sub-par no name actors and terrible child actors, but he manages to use his quick wit and emotional delivery to make the viewers connect with him. The plot of this movie is one of the better ones I've heard of in the horror genre these days.
The twists are unexpected even when you expect them. The movie doesn't heavily rely on jump scares, but you do get your fair share of them. The brutality is slightly less than I expected from an R-movie, but whatever.
The movie's best aspect is the chilling camera-work, that let off an eerie feeling that leaves you scared. The confusing plot points eventually are answered in the end, giving with such an unexpected twist ended that will make you confused yet satisfied.
Trust me, it's better than Insidious.
