Review of Sinister (2012) by D.j. N — 16 Oct 2013
Ethan Hawke is impressive as a husband and father obsessed with his profession. He loves his family so much, but his vanity is what plunges him deeper and deeper into the hell of his obsession. SPOILER ALERT: When he does eventually meet his fate, the look on his face is just fantastic.
It sums up the reality of the whole situation, which is that he did this to himself, and now he can't do anything about it. Unfortunately, as the film reaches it's conclusion, it stoops to a low level using conventional horror gimmics instead of giving us something truly fresh.
I KNEW the last five seconds of the movie would pan out the way it did. Another positive about the film though, were the very disturbing Super 8 snuff films of the murders. They were creatively dreadful, and the spooky score just added more dread.
All in all, this was a solid horror experience in my humble opinion.
