Review of Sinister (2012) by Renzo V — 01 Jun 2014
"SNUFF MOVIES IN THE ATTIC".
- 'Sinister' is a 2012 supernatural horror movie from director Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Day the Earth Stood Still), starring Ethan Hawke (Assault on Precinct 13 remake, Before The Devil Knows You're Dead). In the hype of supernatural horror films, this 'Sinister' is pretty good. The disturbing snuff films, the darkness and especially the face of mr. Boogie/Bughuul are really setting the tone. Perfect to watch late at night... Notice the small appearance by Vincent D'Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket) as professor Jonas. Be careful when watching old home movies.
Crime writer Ellison Oswalt (Hawke) moves with his wife Tracy and children Trevor and Ashly into their new home. Because his two last books were a flop, Ellison hopes he can find the right inspiration. What he didn't tell his wife is that they have moved into a house where the previous owners were found hanging on a tree in the yard and their daughter has gone missing. During a trip to the attic, Ellison finds a mysterious box containing a projector and five 8 mm film. When watching these, the writer is both shocked and intrigued to see the footage of the family getting hung. He notices a strange symbol in each of the movies and also sees flashes of a demonic figure. Can he solve the mystery or will he get more than he bargained for?
