Review of Sinister (2012) by Mr M — 04 Sep 2015
First off I'm guessing that the first thing you thought when you heard of this was, "Wow, horror movie. Demons, wow, scary..." That's what I thought too.
This film is so much more than that. Yes, there are a few jump scares, maybe more like 7 or 8 and they are very, very cheap and extremely predictable but in between that is an incredibly tense, suspenseful and amazing horror movie.
It's nothing revolutionary but it's a good horror movie, and for this genre that might as well be revolutionary. I'm not going to bother with the plot because the plot is nothing new, not even a summary. I'll tell you don't look at any trailers or videos, you want to go into this one blind.
Sure, the design of the villain is awful, he looks like he belongs in some rack with some other Halloween costumes in Party City but you don't see him much so it's mostly fine. There's an overuse though of the 'creepy kid' fad who aren't that creepy really. They just have some face paint rubbed on and that's it. The little girls acting isn't amazing but everyone else does fine, especially Ethan Hawke and his wife who I can't remember the name of.
Don't come to this movie expecting striking cinematography, a deep & metaphorical story, great acting all that, but you can expect to be scared, at least if you're like me.
