Review of Sinister 2 (2015) by Andrew A — 27 Aug 2015
Its always hard to go into a movie with optimism when it has terrible reviews.I went into Sinister 2 with extremely low expectations due to this and unfortunately Sinister 2 takes everything that made Sinister good and throws it right out the window.
Sinister was a really tense and eerie movie mainly due to its super 8 footage and the creative choice by scott derrickson to not show the demon Bagul too much. Sinister 2 does the complete opposite by showing Bagul so much right from the get go that there is absolutely no tension/eerieness whatsoever.
The opening shot of this movie itself was a loud jump scare as compared to the creepy and quiet opening of Sinister which set the tone for that movie. The super 8 footage in this movie has also been made over the top with killings that feature crocodiles, rats etc.
Its like they had to up the gore factor to make it disturbing. I preferred the simple methods used in the first movie. The Super 8 footage is completely shoehorned into this movie and the whole plot of sinister 2 feels completely useless.
This movie is clearly an unnecessary sequel made to make money as the first one was successful. Luckily there are some positives which are its likeable main leads, some creepy locations(corn fields, church) and good acting from both leads.
The jump scares at least involve bagul or the ghost children and theres some payoff instead of stupid scares like the tea kettle making a loud noise etc. All in All, Sinister 2 is watchable but theres really no point watching it as there are a dozen other mediocre horror films out there.
