A creepy ghoul stalks a new family and the results are exactly the same as before. "Sinister 2" is a dull gore-fest with zero scares and zero pleasure. It's a disposable retread to the original "Sinister" which was a fine chiller. The sequel has some of the same stuff you've seen in other horror movies, jump-scares, gruesome killings, and creepy kids. Do you think any of this is still scary today? Not anymore.
"Sinister 2" follows a new family, a mother and her twin boys who move into a secluded farmhouse trying to start a new life. Courtney (Shannyn Sossamon) wants to move on with her life after escaping from her abusive husband. However, this house has a secret, it once belonged to Ellison Oswalt (played by Ethan Hawke in the original movie) and his family until they got murdered by a shadowy ghoul named Bughuul. In fact, the murders of the Oswalt family mark an exact resemblance to a series of family slayings dating back as much as fifty years ago.
Now a group of ghostly children want twin brother, Dylan (Robert Dylan Sloan) to watch a series of grisly home movies with them but he refuses to watch them because they are despicable. Meanwhile, former Deputy So & So (James Ransone) is investigating the murders connected to the ghoul and he plans to burn down the homes where those murders took place. When he reaches the farmhouse, he is alarmed to discover Courtney and her twin boys living there.
So & So tells Courtney to not leave her home because if you leave the farmhouse, the ghoul can still go after you. Things only get worse from there, the ghostly children have taken control of Dylan's twin brother, Zach (Dartanian Sloan) and he beats up Dylan for being a total pussy. The ghostly children want Zach to complete one more task for Bughuul, use a Super 8 camera and film the murders of his twin brother and mother.
This whole movie is lifeless and forgettable.
Everything that was good in Scott Derrickson's original 2012 sleeper hit has been wiped away. The performances are not very good and the writing is cynically lazy.
"Sinister 2" is another horror sequel that fails to live up to the original.
