I quite enjoyed Sinister. It was a very self contained, eery horror film with solid acting and suspense. Now, just like all successes, a sequel was determined necessary. After watching it, it certainly wasn't necessary.

Sinister 2 follows the deputy from the first film, now retired and travelling the country to stop the killings. It certainly is am interesting idea, and there are some interesting bits and pieces of new mythology thrown into the film.

Unfortunately, bad acting, bad dialogue, and an over abundance of horror cliches make this a film worth skipping. For starters, we no longer have Ethan Hawke, who really sold the everyman father. Instead, we have the deputy, who wasn't that good to begin with, and he is backed up by a B and C team of actors who come off as either wooden or overacting.

And no one is helped by the painfully dumb screenplay that overlooks it's own rules for the sake of pushing the film forward. The scares are typical modern day scares: Loud noises that are ear shattering that wake you up from your coma of boredom.

There isn't anything eery about the scares, and much like everything else, they're generic. Overall, the first Sinister will remain a nice little suspenseful gem, whereas its sequel will remain at the bottom of the bargain bin.
