Review of Single White Female (1992) by Kaylee L — 02 Jan 2008
When Allison Jones (Bridget Fonda) discovers her fiancee cheated on her she kicks him out of her apartment and immediately begins a search for a room mate. Enter Hedra (Jennifer Jason Leigh) - shy and frumpy, but seemingly sweet and fun to be around. The two women quickly become fast friends - but soon Allison discovers that Hedra isn't who she seems to be and there might be something sinister lurking beneath the surface.
I found this film quite enjoyable and still strong for today's audiences. This is a psychological thriller, not a horror movie, so don't expect any exciting kills or buckets of gore. (Although there is a fair amount of nudity from the two leading ladies.).
The performances from the leads are amazing - especially that of Jennifer Jason Leigh. Her transformation from shy and sweet to menacing and psychotic was great. Bridget Fonda was also very good, but she was definitely outshined by Leigh.
The scariest part about this film is that it could actually happen - especially now with todays technology - identity theft is already a serious problem, how hard would it be for someone to wreck your life and then take it over? Not that far fetched.
Overall a solid thriller that still holds true today. Leigh's performance steals the show. Worth the watch.
