Review of Single White Female (1992) by Sherry L — 09 May 2009
There are some things that I like about this movie. Im a sucker for thriller, horror, suspence and this movie has some potencial indeed but it somehow doesn't work all the way out. Im not sure where it goes wrong, but the movie is somewhat a little bit too predictable.
You know from the start about what's going to happen. Allie breaks up with her boyfriend after learning he's been unfaithful with his ex wife. Her apartment is expensive so she needs a lodger to make ends meet.
She chooses a shy, nice girl whom soon starts copying Allie's clothes and appearance. She wants her soo badly to be her identical twin, and to sum it up, she kills everyone trying to stop her. This psycho-lodger theme has been used quite some times and it tends to be a drag when the lodgers "bad vibes" appear too soon in the film.
We want suprises, something we haven't seen before. But still there are some brilliant things. For example when Hedda, the psycho copycat, comes from the hairdressers' shocking Allie with a new haircut, identical to Allie's.
Jennifer Jason Leigh plays Hedda and she does it really well but Bridget Fonda is just as poor as she usually is. The message with this movie is : Beware of the copycats!
