Review of Singin' in the Rain (1952) by Lala B — 04 Jan 2011
You know, sometimes I think that classics like this are regarded as classics just because they're old, and old people like to brag about how things were better in the old days, and how movies today have lost that magic and aren't as good as they used to be, blah blah blah. Well, after watching "Singin' in the Rain," I'm more convinced than ever that those old people know what they're talking about. This film is just flat out fun. One of the most fun films I've ever seen.
This is when actors had to be good at all the elements: singing, dancing, and acting. These are all-around professional entertainers, not "actors-turned-singers" or "singers-turned-actors." In this movie, you won't see Catherine Zeta Jones stumble through a dance routine, or witness Ewan McGregor ruin an Elton John song. Gene Kelly plays the role of Don Lockwood with such grace and charm, and seamlessly switches from dialogue to song, and back again. He was a handsome mother effer. Debbie Reynolds was super cute too, and just as charming.
The songs were awesome, and the dialogue was always sharp and funny. You know how you think of a movie and say,"I really liked the scene when...(insert description)....That was a great scene."? That can be said about almost any scene in this movie.
The feeling I got from watching this movie was pure joy. I don't know how else to put it. It's just a joyous wonderful film.
