Review of Singin' in the Rain (1952) by Nate W — 25 Jul 2011
As far as musicals go, there's nothing all that special about "Singing in the Rain", but it's a film defined by its moments, whereby the whole is less than the sum of its parts. But such wonderful parts they are.
Gene Kelly does what he does best, lighting up the sound stage floor with his nimble tap shoes to the eternal delight of audiences. Like all musicals of the time, the song-and-dance numbers are mostly incidental, but they're so beautifully staged and entertainingly performed that all can be forgiven.
Obvious highlights include the numbers "Singing in the Rain", "Good Morning", "Make 'Em Laugh", and "The Broadway Melody Ballet".
