Review of Singin' in the Rain (1952) by Uditha D — 23 Feb 2012
Lina: You couldn't kiss me like that and not mean it just a teensy-weensy bit!
Don: Meet the greatest actor in the world! I'd rather kiss a tarantula!
Lina: Oh you don't mean that!
Don: I don't... Joe, bring me a tarantula!
It's lines like this that made me really enjoy this brilliant comedy, but in the end, it's brilliant in other respects too. Though it was unappreciated at the time (for what reason I simply can't fathom), it's easy to see why this is considered a definitive musical. All the elements - the performances, the songs (though not originals), the dance movements, and even the lines (as shown above) - are just about perfect. It's also the most effective musical COMEDY I've watched, and as can be seen, it has finally achieved the super stardom and accolades it deserved back in 1952. Singin' in the Rain has some really mind-reverting dance movements that will knock you down senseless. It has some comedic moments that will leave your sides aching really hard. But above all, it has Jean Hagen as Lina Lamont, and she is exceptionally funny. Having said that, that's not the only worthy part of this lovable comedy, so I solidly will add that watching Singin' in the Rain is just about an enriching experience as it can ever get.
