Review of Singin' in the Rain (1952) by Allan C — 13 Sep 2012
A classic in every sense of the word. I'm not a big musical guy, but this is a musical I dearly love. Not only is it a great cast with with some terrific dance numbers, the fact that this is Hollywood making a film about itself (the move from silent to talking pictures) is very appealing to the film geek in me.
Gene Kelly is charming as ever and his pal Donald O'Connor is probably his funniest sidekick of any of his films. Debbie Reynolds is also very memorable as Gene's love interest and shines as probably Gene's best female counterpart in any of his films, which is saying something considering Gene has danced with Leslie Caron, Rita Hayworth and Cyd Charisse.
The music is great, the dancing is impressive, the comedy is funny and you care about the romantic elements of the story. It's everything you could possibly want in a musical. This film is probably on my top 10 list.
