Review of Singin' in the Rain (1952) by Tony P — 23 Aug 2017
The only prior knowledge I had of this film was the signature song 'Singing in the Rain featured in other films most notably A Clockwork Orange.
It tells a story of Hollywood filmmaking during the transition from silent films to talkies in the 1920s.
The film is part musical, part comedy, part romance. It reminded me of what La La Land could have been like!
It begins in 1927 and the silent film era. Two of the biggest stars are an on-screen partnership Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagan). The trouble is Lamont has an awful voice that until now has been hidden with silent films but is threatened with exposure in the new era of talkies.
The studio and Don come up with a solution using Don's new real life love interest Kathy (Debbie Reynolds) to dub Lina's awful voice.
The film features several iconic songs in its musical element. As well as the 'Singing in the Rain' song other notable songs include 'Make 'Em Laugh.'.
The story has a comedy element that lowers the tone of the film and makes it so enjoyable along with the musical routines.
I've never been a musical fan but thoroughly enjoyed visiting this film.
