Review of Singin' in the Rain (1952) by Andy S — 30 Dec 2017
Wonderfully choreographed and brimming with life and energy. This movie is brilliantly written. The script is so tight and full of intriguing moments.
Gene Kelly is awesome. His acting chops are incredible. Same goes with everyone else in the picture. But Gene's pretty damn funny. Very clever, very witty, and very funny dialogue.
They did that whole sequence where there showing all the pictures that are being made with talking brilliantly. It invokes a sense that one is going mad. The editing in this movie is phenomenal and when you think about when it was made, in 1952, you almost can't even believe it. The colors in this movie are gorgeous especially in the Broadway sequence. The hand-painted sets and the beautiful colors that all the extras are wearing really stand out. The chick he dances with that has the white cloth flowing in the wind, wow, what a beauty. That whole sequence to is really pretty and almost sexy.
I will say, it does feel like some of the dance sequences are too long and drawn out. Which is hilarious when you think about how Family Guy parodies this same exact thing. It was really interesting to watch how movie sets would have approached the whole recording sound back in those days when talking movies were becoming huge. Lena was such a conniving and crooked little witch. But I'd still hit that. What a marvelous ending though, I'm glad they ended it on that note.
Overall, some of the musical scores in the movie are kind of cheesy and they go on for too long but most are great. This is probably my second favorite musical movie right next 'All That Jazz'. Wonderfully acted, choreographed, shot, everything!
