Review of Singin' in the Rain (1952) by Alexis S — 27 Mar 2012
Gene Kelly plays a silent film superstar who has to adapt to the incoming era of talking pictures. He decides to do so with a glitzy musical, but his best pal (Donald O'Connor), his egocentric costar (Jean Hagen,) and his new love (Debbie Reynolds) complicate the matter.
I'm not a big fan of showtunes, but I was stunned by this movie's genial humor, skillful dance routines, and showstopping musical numbers. Singing in the Rain has a lot of razzle-dazzle, but it also contains a witty script, strong characters, and unforgettable acting.
I have a hard time imagining how someone could fail to be charmed by this fantastic movie.
