Review of Sing Street (2016) by Greg B — 20 May 2016
"Sing Street" is a coming-of-age story about an Irish teenager who forms a futurist band to try and impress the girl next door. He faces many obstacles, including social ridicule, a volatile music industry, and separating patents.
His dream is to make it big in the industry. This film was fine to watch, but the execution is stilted. The film really goes nowhere and makes its tonal transitions kind of awkwardly. It doesn't really serve a purpose and doesn't really accomplish anything by its culmination.
It's a bit scattered. Also, the plot devices are derivative for the underdog story and we are left with the underdog succeeding in the face of all adversity. Most of the characters are also caricatures and are there to serve the protagonist's ends.
The film is all right, but it's not fleshed out all that well ------------------------------------------------------ C+.
