Review of Sing Street (2016) by Zack M — 03 Dec 2016
Sing Street is an absolutely riveting and rich musical/comedy/drama from start to finish. The story, much like Denis Villeneuve's Arrival and Prisoners, follows an already well known subject and gives.
It its own identity and charm that makes the movie feel like its part of its own genre. Everything about this movie is near-perfect. The teen actors shine, which is a pleasant turn around for what teen actors are known for, the direction is mostly great, and the music is absolutely outstanding. I'd be very surprised if this movie doesn't get an Oscar nomination for best original soundtrack. Unlike most teen movies, this one uses its music as a way for you to know how the characters feel, in a way that always seems genuine. My personal favorite is Drive it Like You Stole It, and I hope it gets an Oscar nomination as well. Finally, the love story. This movie centers around a boy who's main drive to write music is to impress a girl. If that's not enough for you to convince your significant other to watch this with you then nothing will. Our protagonist is constantly fighting things such as a divorce, a bully, and a priest that is so mean im surprised they didn't arrest him at the end. But when he meets this girl, his music begins to mean something. And there's something so beautifully and deeply personal about the songs he writes that you constantly cheer him on. You feel what these characters feel and it helps create a special bond between viewer and protagonist. This is leagues better than any teen musical you'll ever watch on Disney channel. Sing Street is a movie that will have you thinking and dancing to its songs. I recommend this movie to anyone. Trust me when I say its one of the beat you'll see this year.
