Review of Sing Street (2016) by Martin M — 27 Aug 2016
A quirky twist on a tale as old as time; Sing Street takes a concept so familiar and simple and makes it seemingly brand new once again. All the typical story elements of a high school, teenager Rom com is put in place, from the loner kid with a hidden talent trying to impress the girl, to the outcasts banding together to become popular.
But for some reason there is something unique and special about this telling of the story that left a smile on my face the whole run time of the movie. One of the most commendable aspects of the film is it's music, which is genuinely catchy.
The songs that are written by the kids in the film actually sound like good songs you would listen to on a regular basis and I found myself grooving along with the movie, much to the disdain of the patrons sitting around me (I will definitely be buying this soundtrack).
What was interesting about the film though is the way that it tricks it's audiences as the film progresses. The film begins, appearing to be poorly acted and shot, but then slowly moves towards professionalism and quality performances - much like how the band progresses from being a bad cover band to a genuinely amazing band in the movie.
Friends, this feel good film, I would even go as far as saying it may be my favourite film this year and I highly highly recommend the watch.
