Review of Sing (2016) by Greg C — 31 Dec 2016
I liked it, but not as much as I hoped. Sing zips out of the gate with some superfast zooms through the city as it introduces all the characters. This is an interesting approach. It is also a bit frenetic, and the movie doesn't get to slow down for 30 minutes.
All those quick cuts and partial songs left me feeling like I wasn't getting what I wanted, full songs and full characters. Eventually a Koala Bear Matthew McConaughey gets to tell his back story and ground the movie a bit.
There are a lot of characters, so it is difficult to care about most of them. That said the singing voice work is good. Seth McFarlane is the crooner bomb. The final act is really solid. Garth Jennings as one eyed chameleon Miss Crawly is my favorite case of movie director contributing B-character voice since Brad Bird played Edna Mode in The Incredibles.
SPOILER: A koala wears a speedo and soaps himself up to wash cars with his body. His buddy, a sheep, pitches in as a living chamois. During this, "Nessun Dorma!" by Pavaroti from Turandot is being played.
