Review of Sing (2016) by Jeramie K — 11 Jan 2017
It's far from a masterpiece or even Illumination's best, but it is a film that everyone can get behind.
It's fun, cute, has a star-studded cast, and hits many pop and culture notes with its playlist -- which hits home with some ageless classics and newer pop sensations alike.
There's nothing really new or exceptional here. We've seen music-centric animation before, we've seen life through the eyes of animals. It's familiar, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. The audience can find comfort in this kind of film. They can kick back, relax, and just forget about... everything.
There is no "deep" or underlying philosophy to explore. There is no need to overthink the plot -- or really think at all. And sometimes, again, that is OK. But if a film doesn't push an audience to feel or think... IA film should receive accolades and a reputation befitting of how far they push.
And with Sing... they settled, and so shall we.
