Review of Sing (2016) by Paul V — 02 Apr 2017
What a horrible movie! I am all for "undemanding" movies that have fairly simple plots... but this film's one message is - "If you have talent, nothing else matters." I don't have kids, but shudder the idea of parents showing this to them.
The animation in this was done well, the songs were great... the characters were awful. I definitely understand Sing is geared towards kids, but there are plenty other animated movies that have amazing characters and script. The only characters that grow are the elephant and Rosita.
Buster Moon is a scuzzy guy... which never changes. He bounces checks, lies to people, and cons others in his last-ditch effort to keep his theater open. When it goes bad, he gives up... craps on the cast when they offer to do the show for free... and only after SEES that the elephant has great talent does he decide to steal more stuff to put on the show and lucks into getting his theater back.
Mike is... just wow. If I wanted to see how narcissistic, pompous, manipulative jackasses actually succeed in life... I'd just turn on the news. The movie basically gives him a pass on everything. In the end, the crowd gives him a standing ovation, he gets the car, gets the gold-digging girl, and drives away... with a hint that MAYBE the bear catches him, I guess.
Same with the gorilla...dude never grows as a character. His shining moment... not stealing the prize chest... and learning the paino, so yipee!
Probably looking way too deep into everything in the film, but it got under my skin for some reason.
