Review of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) by Ian R — 21 Sep 2014
I enjoyed this movie, but it did not have the spark that I had hoped for. I will grudgingly have to agree with the criticism that this movie came out far too long after the original. This film had a lot of the same style and violence as the first one, but in the 9 years since the first film a lot has gone on and all of that style and violence felt a bit classic and old, which it probably wouldn't have felt if it had come out within a couple years as the first one.
Despite this loss of momentum, I still really enjoyed a good portion of this film. It was made up of 4 segments and I really enjoyed 3 out of 4 of them. I really liked the opening segment with Marv, "Another Saturday Night.
" I thought it was a nice way to reintroduce viewers to Sin City with a favoured character. "The Long Bad Night" segment with Joseph Gordon-Levitt was probably my favourite! It was an original story for the film and it just felt so different from the other Sin City stories that I know.
It felt more noir and less violent; it felt smaller and more intimate. I thought it was the best part. The "A Dame to Kill For" segment was good as well, and I really enjoyed Josh Brolin's portrayal of Dwight McCarthy.
However, I thought this segment over utlized Eva Green's nudity, though this may have been from the source material. The last segment "Nancy's Last Dance" I enjoyed the idea of, but it did not play out as well as I thought it would.
I felt that including Marv in this segment both over satuated the film with Marv appearances (3 out of the 4 segments) and caused continuity issues with "The Hard Goodbye" segment of the first film.
I also felt like Mickey Rourke's performance as Marv was not as good as the first film, not as into it. Marv was a little to jokey in this film. Overall, I enjoyed my return to Sin City, but it was not the monumentous event I thought it would be years ago.
