Review of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) by Magnus G — 19 Dec 2014
I'm very much in the minority on A Dame to Kill For. Whilst not as innovative and narratively gripping as its predecessor, it's very much the same in terms of style and storytelling with film noir archetypal characters and stark black-and-white with the odd colour touch visuals and episodic stories that are inter-connected.
While that sounds like all this film is doing is copying the first film, the new stories are all exciting and the new characters are all great additions. Eva Green and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are both excellent whilst Josh Brolin is honestly better as Dwight than Clive Owen in my opinion.
Powers Boothe also gets more moments to shine as the villain, and is delightfully slimy and hateful in this. The film is criminally shorter than the first film unfortunately and the ending is abrupt which did leave a bitter taste in my mouth, which if fixed, could've made this on par with the first film.
Nevertheless, this was worth the nine year wait for me and a satisfying return to the titular metropolis.
