Review of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) by Vikki M — 28 Dec 2014
I'm an enormous fan of the predecessor, plain old Sin City and I really had high hopes for this. The graphic novel the titular storyline is based off is easily one of the best in the series and this film sadly doesn't live up to any of my, or by the sound of it - anyone else's expectations.
The visuals are there, that's a given, which is why I've rated it even 3 stars, but as a whole, it simply doesn't work very well. I saw a review suggesting it might have worked better as a mini series and I think I agree.
Too much was crammed in and none of it was quite good enough. Eva Green was a faulous femme fatale, the dame of the title, but I felt Joseph Gordon-Levitt was rather smarmy, and not in an enjoyable way.
There was a couple of cast changes to characters we already know (RIP Michael Clarke Duncan), however we still had some familiar faces from the first film, Jessica Alba as Nancy, the dancing cowgirl and Micky Rourke was on good form as Marv, the deadly, but soft hearted machine with nothing and nobody to lose.
Overall, it was fine and I wouldn't say you should avoid it, it really was very nice to look at, I just really wanted so much more than fine.
