Review of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) by Boogie B — 26 Jun 2016
Not as good as the first one, but it is good in my opinion. A good adaption from the graphic novel. Action, bullets, beautiful babes, amazing cinematography and storyboarding. Sin City : A Dame to Kill For you have my $. SPOILER FREE REVIEW.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is a little jumbled story wise. But overall, it is still an enjoyable follow up, to one of my personal favorite films. Much like the first film, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For presents another gorgeous glimpse of Frank Miller's (Ronin, The Dark Knight Returns) Basin City. Where they have vicious crime lords, brutal thugs, The Girls of Old Town, and... oh yea, Eva Green!
This film is trying to serve us a sequel, prequel, and midquel (if that's a thing), to 2005's Sin City. I do think this is an interesting way to tell us a story. The result, I personally find to be a little jumbled. Such as, the story going back and forth.
Just like the first Sin City; this film highly succeeds with cinematography and amazing visuals. Black and white visuals, mixture of those visuals with some colors, and overall look of the film. I believe is the real selling point. Mainly, because this film looks so different from what an audience these days rarely get. It really does look like it is right out of the comics. On the other hand, the first film had these amazing visuals, with what I think is a better, easier, and more clear of a direction the story Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk 'til Dawn, Planet Terror) would like to show.
Also, I feel like Frank Miller & Robert Rodriguez put more focus into Dwight's (Josh Brolin) story, and character development, than the other characters. For example, most of the side actors/characters come in and out without really much of an effect of the story. I believe an example of this Jamie Chung (Sucker Punch, Big Hero 6) as Miho.
The acting is once again done very well. This movie truly does have an all star cast. Especially Eva Green (Casino Royale, Dark Shadows) character Ava Lord, and Joseph Gordon -Levitt's (The Dark Knight Rises, 50/50) character Johnny. These two are scene stealers, especially Eva Green. She is badass, cruel, a viper, sinister, sexy, naked (oops spoiler), and a interesting femme fatale. Everyone in this film does very well though. But let's talk about everyone's two favorite characters. The veterans, Mickey Rourke (Immortals, The Expendables) as Marv and Jessica Alba (Honey, Fantastic Four) as Nancy. Marv, wasn't as used as much in this film as he was in the first. In this film, he serves more as everyone's "troubled" buddy, and muscle. It was interesting to see how Nancy has changed from the first film. She gave the story, and character a new pace.
So these are my final Bitchin' Buddha thoughts. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is not as great as the first film. But it is still very enjoyable. The visuals are still great, interesting characters, and naked Eva Green (Damn it! Spoiled it Again!) My only complaint is the lack of using certain characters, no real surprises, and jumbled story. Someone in the theater described it as visiting an old friend, and I would have to agree. It was fun, and something I wouldn't mind watching again. I would give Sin City: A Dame to Kill For a 3.5 out of 5.
