Review of Sin City (2005) by George B — 24 Aug 2014

Sin City is perfect. I have seen very few films where I can confidently say that I have no complaints with it whatsoever. Sin City gave me everything I could want in a film and then some.

What can I say that has not already been said? The first thing that grabs the attention of the viewer is the beautiful, unique visual style and brilliant music. It is unlike anything you have ever seen before and is just so rich with detail that it makes it all the more engrossing. The style is unique to the film and makes it feel all the more real because nothing else is like it. It really should have been up for some technical Oscars- it is that great. I really could not take my eyes off the screen at all, not simply because it looked beautiful but because the story was fantastic.

The film is based off of a deeply rich graphic novel and nothing is lost in translation at all, it is the key definition of a film based on a pre-existing medium and is adapted perfectly. Besides the layered story, the cast is perfectly chosen with every actor playing their role perfectly; it should have been up for a SAG award! I won't name them all individually because that would take way too long but they are all fantastic- that is all you need to know. The film also has a brutally dark sense of humor and I laughed quite frequently. The film also takes risks that aren't commonly seen in other films of its type, it is refreshing to see a character just be killed off when you were least expecting it or have something else happen that just comes out of nowhere. Oh, I have thought of one complaint, I wish it was longer, I have seen the other versions but I would happily watch, like, a 4 hour cut or something but hey, we're getting a sequel!

I have had a really hard time writing this because every time I watch this film I fall in love with it all over again and immediately just want to go back to the start and watch it all over again. I wanted to put some effort into this besides just writing, I love it over and over again but how creative can you be when you love everything about it, that is why I kept this rather short. It is a perfect adaptation of a graphic novel, probably one of the best ever, and there is nothing else like it at all, besides its sequel.
