Review of Sin City (2005) by Allan C — 22 May 2015
This film was a knockout when it was first released. Since then, quite a few films have tried the heavy CGI aesthetic, the Frank Miller related "300" and "The Spirit" being two notable heavily stylized usages of CGI, but this film had something the others didn't get nearly as well.
This film had strong stories, character development and a wildly strong cast that features current bankable stars like Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis and Josh Hartnett, some cool actors like Clive Owen, Benicio Del Toro and Carla Gugino, and some awesome "past their prime" actors like Rutger Hauer, Powers Boothe and especially Mickey Rourke.
While co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller (who's comic book series the film is based upon) shoot the film is a style that's wild stylized, the script is strong enough that the film could have easily stood on it's own if it were shot in a more conventional manner, whereas films like "300" or "The Spirit" would have been pretty dull if they'd been shot in such a manner.
I haven't seen the sequel, which got mostly mediocre to bad reviews, so I was wondering if it was a matter of audiences becoming numb to this style of film and it losing some of it's uniqueness, but this film is still an exciting, sexy, violent neo-noir action flick.
