Review of Simon Birch (1998) by Laura H — 18 Nov 2008

Simon Burch is a pretty clever/feel good movie. It's your basic big things come in small packages movie, but whoever the dwarf is who plays Burch is very likable and convincing in his role. I normally can't stand child actors, but he and his best friend Joe and very good and have great chemistry.

I thought the whole "God has a plan" went a little over the top, considering a lot of people could have done what Simon did at the end. There were a lot of great scenes in this though and the dialogue was very solid.

Oliver Pratt is good as he always is. Ashley Judd plays a surprisingly good (and sexy) mother even though getting killed by a softly hit pop up is totally unbelievable. Way to go out like a bitch.... I've seen people get hit in the face by 100mph line drives.

She got hit by a lollipopup by a dwarf. Whatever... the old setting is very good. Jim Carey's role is very small but good. Altogether very solid, funny and heart breaking movie with great acting all around.

.. not a single weak performance.
