They SLAUGHTERED the book. So bad that John Irving himself insisted not to bee associated with it and asked them to change the characters' names. And right he was! Owen Meany aka Simon Birch is not that little pervert who only cares about that blond girl! If you hated the movie, you'll probably love the book, so I suggest you read it if that's the case.
It's a pity really, that the script was such a piece of crap because otherwise the movie had a really good potential, with the great cast it has.
