A touching, humane romantic comedy about deeply troubled and deeply problematic people who are nevertheless deeply human and deeply sympathetic. The performances are great - Jennifer Lawrence stakes a firm claim to the title of "best actress of her generation" with her Oscar-winning role, Bradley Cooper sheds his "Hangover"-era smarm to reveal himself as a talented and versatile actor, and Robert DeNiro breaks out of the late career glide path he's been on over the past 10 years to remind us that he can still be a great actor when he wants to be.

But it's the local color that makes the film - as a native Philadelphian I've never seen a movie that better captures the collective psyche of the city's hardscrabble, sports-obsessed white working class.

One could quibble that the movie is a little too cavalier in its treatment of the problem of mental illness, but this is still one of the better movies ever made about the City of Brotherly Love.
