Review of Silver Linings Playbook (2012) by Merol Kim C — 20 May 2014
At first I told myself that this would be a drag but the moment they landed the very first scene, the words were immediately swept right out of my mouth. There are so many great things about this movie.
First, the scenario present in the story felt real. Second, the performances of Cooper, De Niro and Lawrence are truly topnotch. Third, the dialogue is excellent--there wasn't a single line that made me roll my eyes--and everything was "really there", the emotion of the characters, their concept of overcoming bipolar illnesses and the laughs that make it a fun popcorn movie.
Fourth, the storyline was delivered with such precision that it never lost its connection with the viewer. Likewise, the balance between the drama and comedy is remarkable and director David Russell gets extra points for that.
Fifth, it did not fail to leave a message--"You have to do everything you can, you have to work your hardest, and if you do, you have a shot at a silver lining." (Pat). Silver Linings Playbook is glowing with beauty .
. . and weirdness. It's a fun and uplifting romantic comedy that is definitely outstanding compared to most flicks of the same genre. No doubt that it is worthy for all of its academy award nominations.
5/5.
