Review of Silver Linings Playbook (2012) by Joe C — 04 Jan 2015
A brilliant, brilliant romantic comedy that turns all clichés of the genre into virtues, Silver Linings Playbook pokes your funny bone, appeals to your inner romantic and, like all good dramas, actually builds the story off its characters.
An adaptation of the Matthew Quick's novel, we have the quirky but barbed tale about a bipolar man fresh out of a mental institution obsessively trying to win back his wife strike up a friendship with a depressed quasi-nympho depressed widow.
It's atypical boy-meets-girl script is astoundingly good, while still retaining the utmost respect for those with mental illnesses, Jennifer Lawrence is at her foul-mouthed best, and the ending is one of cinema's most satisfying.
Admittedly it's maximum magic needs a second watch to be fully absorbed, but even the hardest cynic is susceptible to Silver Linings' appealing, engaging and plain irresistible character. It's a fabulous movie.
