Review of Silver Linings Playbook (2012) by Brad E — 22 Jan 2015
Standing independently from Matthew Quick's novel, David O. Russell has provided a tremendously acted, enjoyable romantic comedy. Having read the book before seeing the film though, I was shocked by how unfaithful it was to the novel.
Please note, I am not usually one of those "book loyalist" types. But when the climax of the book is thrown to the side and explained on a whim in the first 20 minutes of the film, you know something is just not quite right.
What fans of the novel are left with is nothing more than a slap in the face, as one of the main themes of the novel (the self-denial of Bradley Cooper's character) is left out of the film altogether.
What we have is a different story with a different climax and characters who exhibit different personalty traits than that of their counterparts in the novel.
