Could this have been the best adaptation of Matthew Quick's novel? Absolutely. But it's not without it's shortcomings. David O. Russell's direction all too often comes off as overly confident, and a little too reminiscent of Martin Scorsese.
But the knack he does have is getting the best performances possible out of his cast. Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro and without question, Jennifer Lawrence, give their damned best performances. The results are explosive.
The fact is, this is an okay movie, turned great through performances alone. I'm not certain if there is any other film in existence that has achieved that much luck.
